ShowMi: Helping migrants to show the value of their language to othersThe Grundtvig project, ShowMi: Helping migrants to show the value of their language to others ended in October 2011. The project, which brought together partners from seven European countries, has achieved its aims; to enable the language skills of migrants become more visible and more effectively used in education and in the labour market and to improve the perception and status of migrants within the host country by raising awareness of their linguistic competence. Specifically, the project has achieved the following;
Although the project is now finished, the website will remain live, and partners will continue to use the tools in their own organisations and publicise and disseminate the outcomes and product within their countries and across Europe. The Conference for the project, ShowMi: Helping migrants to show the value of their language to others took place at Lancashire College, Chorley, UK on 18 and 19 June 2011. Lancashire College is a centre of Lancashire Adult Learning, one of the seven partner organisations participating in the project. The conference opened with a well-received keynote speech from Arvind Bhatt on multilingual communication and social identification and there was further interesting input from other speakers on European policies for promoting plurilingualism and on recognising local community languages. Participants aware also provided with an overview of the aims and the achievements of the project and had the opportunity to use the materials and tools produced. Feedback form the conference was positive and participants left with a thorough understanding of the key issues relevant to the themes of the project and with the knowledge and skills to use the Show Mi tools. Success StoriesTolga is 31 years old and comes from Turkey. Hel left his home country with his family as a young boy and settled in Germany. He finished school there and got his first job in the sales and customer service department of a telecommunications company. During his first holiday he went to Turkey and there he met his current wife – Kasia, who comes from Poland and just as Tolga spent her holiday in Turkey. |
